The Weimers - A Tale of One Branch

This website is dedicated to all the wonderful Weimers, past and present, known and unknown.

Once upon a time, in 1830 to be exact, George Weimer, Sr. and his pregnant wife Eve packed up their seven children and set sail for America. They were leaving everything they knew behind and risking all for the chance of a better life for themselves and their children. They didn't come alone. The group included Eve's brother, Jacob Wiederich, and sister, Margaret Schadenberger, with their families.

Eve and George lost a baby born on the voyage, but the rest of the group eventually landed in Philadelphia on June 19, 1830 after a voyage of 90 days. An oral tradition in the family explains this exceptionally long trip with a tale of dirty deeds almost done: The master sailed south. He was intending to sell the passengers into slavery in Mexico. By the time the passengers found out about his plan, the ship was almost to the Gulf of Mexico. The threat to throw him overboard changed the captain's mind (and course) for Philadelphia. Fact or fiction, by 1832 The Weimers and the Wiederichs were living side-by-side in Roulette, PA with the Schadenbergers living outside of Coudersport just west of St. Eulalia cemetery.

We invite you to learn about these hardy people from which we came and to contribute to our knowledge of who we are and who we were. See what we have become!
